Objectif
AUSIAS will show how advanced telematics applications can cut congestion, improve traffic management and help to protect the environment. It will integrate different urban control and information systems already in existence, in accordance with EU standardisation proposals. At the same time, it will adapt and demonstrate new technologies, also partly developed from earlier EU research. This overall approach will cover areas such as public transport including timetabling and vehicle maintenance, and parking management and information, with demonstrable improvements in real-life urban traffic conditions.
AUSIAS main objective is the demonstration, in a large scale and under real conditions, of how "Advanced Transport Telematics" (ATT) can help European cities to reduce congestion, improve traffic management (not only control) and provide the means for a sustainable socio economic improvement, compatible with environmental protection.
The project relies on three strategic objectives:
i) Integration: AUSIAS will demonstrate the benefits for users and operators of integrating the different Control and Information Systems usually coexisting in a European city.
ii) Standardisation: AUSIAS will follow, when interconnecting or enhancing the different ATT applications, the emerging harmonisation and standardisation proposals resulting from previous work in DRIVE I & II.
iii) New technologies: together with the objectives of integration and standardisation, AUSIAS will provide the opportunity of further adapting and demonstrating new technologies. An important part of those technologies come from other European Research and Development programmes such as ESPRIT or national Spanish R&D initiatives (PASO).
That will be applied within six areas:
a) Traffic management (Urban-Interurban): information exchange between control centres.
b) Public transport : Bus priority at crossings; Dynamic scheduling of public transport, including real-time rescheduling, and Demand Responsive Systems (DRS) for elderly&disabled; Integrated fleet maintenance, including preventive, corrective and predictive maintenance.
c) Dynamic information to users, using Variable Message Signs (VMS) and multimedia information services.
d) Parking management and information.
e) Traffic modelling.
f) Incident Management.
The main project anticipated result is the integration of these technologies into a framework that will be demonstrated under real conditions, improving traffic and transport situation in an European mid-size city
