CITY LABORATORIES ENABLING ORGANISATION OF PARTICULARLY ADVANCED TELEMATICS RESEARCH AND ASSESSMENT

Objectif

The purpose of CLEOPATRA is to harness modern telematics research to on-road route guidance for vehicle drivers, particularly in systems of coordinated guidance and traffic control. It will test methods for predicting path flows, journey times in special conditions, and the effects of unexpected incidents. The project will also evaluate and demonstrate in-vehicle route guidance information and strategies for variable message signs, and combinations of such strategies with urban traffic control systems in relation to optimum routeing and improved operations. Its multimedia approach to route guidance is expected to boost network efficiency and safety for those who own or operate systems, while decreasing journey time and stress for the drivers who use them.

CLEOPATRA is a multi-site/one-application project dealing with the field validation of techniques/methods and algorithms to support the guidance and information systems as free-standing technologies or, more importantly, as part of a system including co-ordinated information guidance and traffic control. The main operational objective of CLEOPATRA is to bring developments and findings of current and future state-of-the art research into existing or planned operational Dynamic Route Guidance systems.

CLEOPATRA includes verification and demonstration of:

- A new algorithm of Path Flow Estimator developed in ATT(DRIVE 2) project MARGOT to predict path flows between Origin and Destination. It will be demonstrated in a number of cities in CLEOPATRA and extended to a multiclass Path Flow Estimator, where guided and unguided drivers may be distinguished.

- Journey Time Prediction , a basic requirement for Dynamic Route Guidance Systems. Demonstration ranges from the advanced methods based on time-series analysis developed in the project MARGOT to further developments in CLEOPATRA focusing on (i) Journey Time Prediction in special conditions and (ii) innovative methods using neural networks and fuzzy algorithms.

- Algorithms for Prediction of Incident Effects already developed in the project MARGOT for on-line applications and targeted to Dynamic Route Guidance systems. These have a large potential for wider applications in urban networks.

- Strategies for Variable Message Signs to optimise messages/advice in urban context, incorporating drivers response, including Parking Guidance Information systems.

- Dynamic Route Guidance strategies for In-Vehicle Information Systems, both beacon and radio based, covering issues as optimum routeing and multi-routeing

- Dynamic Route Guidance integration of collective / individual route guidance together and with the Urban Traffic Control systems

Main cities involved are: Athens, Berlin, Göteborg, London, Lyon, Paris, Southampton, Stuttgart, Toulouse and Torino. By looking at Dynamic Route Guidance with a multimedia approach (individual, collective), CLEOPATRA has a unique opportunity to exploit the enormous synergism in methodology and practice that can hardly be achieved through the co-operation of projects oriented to one specific technology.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
