DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATION OF CO-ORDINATED CONTROL OF CORRIDORS

Objectif

The purpose of DACCORD is the development and validation of a telematics-based system for coordinated traffic control on motorways linking urban areas. A further objective is an open system architecture for similar purposes. These practical applications build on earlier EU projects to focus on both coordinated and integrated control, involving simultaneous use of multiple control instruments at network instead of link level. On-line short-term forecasts of flows, speeds and travel times are also to be considered. The work on architecture will pursue the development of framework methodology and architecture design.

The main objective of the D'ACCORD project is to design, implement and validate a practical Dynamic Traffic Management System (DTMS) for integrated and co-ordinated control of inter-urban motorway corridors. An additional objective is to further develop an open system architecture for inter-urban traffic management.

The practical application work is a continuation and validation of the DYNA and EUROCOR projects of DRIVE-2, and focuses on :

integrated control: applied at the network-wide level rather than link level

co-ordinated control: simultaneous use of multiple control instruments

use of on-line short-term forecasts of flows, speeds, travel-times

application of motorway-to-motorway control ("mainline metering").

The architecture oriented work is a continuation and validation of the GERDIEN project and the SATIN task force, and concentrates on :

further development of the framework methodology

refinement and extension of the architecture design.

The project will provide results at two levels :

practical experience gained with innovative control tools applied in different inter-urban Traffic Management Systems; advances in European Open System Architecture development.
