PERSONAL MOBILE TRAVELLER AND TRAFFIC INFORMATION SERVICE

Objetivo

PROMISE is to give EU citizens easy access to a mobile multi-modal travel and traffic information service throughout their journey. Previous test results reflect a need for better user interface techniques and a wider spectrum of multi-modal services. New lightweight small-sized ergonomically built portable terminals aim, via simple self-explanatory interface using multimedia telematics, to present information via text, graphics and sound. Billing and accounting techniques will be integrated in open system architecture documented for subsequent standardisation. The project will carry out tests at several test sites with over one hundred prototype terminals.

The objective of PROMISE is to provide travellers with easy access to a multimodal travel and traffic information service during their whole journey. The consortium will create a mobile multimodal traveller information system for Europe-wide deployment. It has a strong industrial core with a vertical structure consisting of telecom operators, car manufacturers, equipment suppliers, service providers, and public authorities.

The services will be based on an analysis of test results from the previous phase, which indicate a need for better user interface techniques and a wider spectrum of multimodal services. The target of terminal development is to have a simple and self-explanatory interface. The functionality of the services bases on multimedia telematics, which will use text and graphics to present the resulting information. Billing and accounting techniques will be developed and integrated in the architecture. The system architecture is open so that services can be added dynamically, and the system bases also on the principle of making maximum use of the central processing capability of today's modern computers in order to ease the load on the user terminals, and hence keep down their cost. This architecture also gives the system more flexibility and facilitates easier updating possibilities.

The main deliverables of the project will be an open system architecture documented for subsequent standardisation, test sites in five countries with over one hundred prototype terminals, and documented test results. Two project partners are actively participating to the standardisation work of CEN TC278 WG4 "Traffic and Traveller Information". The participating industrial partners intend to exploit the results by manufacturing terminals, by incorporating the services into their telecommunication infrastructure, and by offering services commercially.
