Clonal variability of the parasite as a predictive tool for different clinical manifestations in tegumentary leishmaniasis of Peru and Bolivia

Objectif

Genetic variability of parasite population in two endemic areas of Leishmaniasis in Peru and Bolivia will be extensively studied using isoenzyme and DNA analysis. Both coding and non-coding regions of the genome will be considered to build up a comprehensive picture of leishmania population variability. If clustering patterns of the isolates becomes apparent then we will proceed to address the question if this fact is related to the variety of clinical manifestations of American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis.

Tha analytical processes that will be improved or developed to study leishmania populations will provide a better understanding of the parasite and the pathogeneicity that underlies the different clinical manifestations of the disease.

The active contribution of each participant is guaranteed because present proposal is consequence of an ongoing STD-2 project. The human resources and material will be obtimized. A training component place a major role in this collaboration among South-South, North-North and North-South.
