Objective
The goal of the project is to evaluate the economic and operational advantages of satellite based vehicle-location systems.
The principal objective of this project has been to evaluate the economic and operational potential of satellite based vehicle location systems.
The functional and operational requirements of such systems (including the transmission of vehicle location and status to a control centre) have been identified. These requirements take into account the different classes of user such as the haulage industry and private motorist, as well as typical applications (management, emergency services, and navigation assistance). The major candidate systems available or foreseen at the time of the research study were investigated in order to: assess the principal advantages and disadvantages of each system, identify parameters on which a performance comparison can be based and evaluate on technical, operational, and economic criteria.
The results show the role that satellite based systems may have for vehicle location purposes, and consider the benefits that such systems may bring to the overall transport system environment. The above referenced parameters and criteria established in the course of this project may also be used in future for the assessment of new system options as these become known.
The functional and operational requirements of such systems (including the transmission of vehicle location and status to a control centre) will be identified. The requirements will take into account the various different classes of user such as the haulage industry or private motorists as well as typical applications, for example fleet management, emergency services, and navigation assistance.
The major candidate systems will be investigated in order to :
assess the principal advantages and disadvantages of each system ,
identify parameters on which a performance comparison can be based
evaluate on technical, operational and economic criteria.
The results will show how a satellite based system could be integrated within an IRTE and consider the benefits that such systems could bring to the overall transport system environment.
