FEASIBILITY STUDY AND DEMONSTRATION WEC FOR A WIND FARM IN COLLARMELE

Objective

The project aim is the installation of one single bladed wind energy converter (M30-250 kW rated power) for demonstration purpose, in order to get the necessary data for the realization of a wind farm in Collarmele (Abruzzo - Italy), which will assure a larger energy supply in this area of the Italian Apennines.
The monitoring system wsa based on an anemometer positioned on the top of a tower 10 m and on an electro-mechanical device to record the power production data. The wind measurement started in March 92 and continued during the whole time of machine operation.
The preliminary estimation of the power production of 620 MWh/year was based on the first 5 months of wind measurement (6.1 m/s average) and on an assumption for the wind shear of alpha = 0.14 (95% average availability of the WEC).
During the first year of operation the annual average wind speed was 5.5 m/s and the power production was 313 MWh. The difference between the actual production and the predicted one is basically deriving from the preliminary over-estimation of the wind potential and on the relatively low availability of the WEC especially during the first period after starting.
Furthermore, the actual wind shear is probably lower than expected and the WEC was limited for the greatest part of the time to a max. powerof 200 kW.
The demonstration project is the first step for the realization of a wind farm. The first source of electricity in the area comes from the national grid. The purpose of the project is to give an alternative clean source of energy to the area. In order to verify and demonstrate the effectiveness of the wind alternative as energy source for electricity production, a medium size single bladed wind energy converter, called M30 with 250 kW rated power, will be installed in a selected site.
In fact, in this area of the Apennines the wind is a big potential energy source in every season due to the good geographical and meteorological conditions.
Preliminary activities, such as identification of the exact site for the installation of the demonstration energy converter, executive design, anemological campaign, preparation of the installation site will be carried out.
The M30 wind energy converter will be erected on a suitable foundation and connected to the national grid.
The equipment forthe grid connection will be contained in a special building where a room is devoted to lodge the access panel to the general control unit; this panel is connected to the one at WEC tower base.
The data acquisition system will be lodged in the above mentioned building too.
The work program includes a one year demonstration period and a measurement program which will start after the WEC installation, grid connection and commissioning. The data acquisition is related to operational and anemometric measurements for the correct evaluation of the energy production.
All this information and data will be necessary to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of the installation of a wind farm in the area.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
