A DEMONSTRATION OF THE COMMERCIALISATION POTENTIAL (VALAR 2,5 MW)

Objective

To demonstrate that by combining two innovative techniques a 2.5 MW offshore wind farm can be constructed more economically than previously believed.
The amount of installed effect of wind generation that an existing electrical grid can accept is often limited by the voltage quality requirements eg. 'flicker'. With the use of a new control system the windfarm can be connected to a "weaker" transmission network.
With this project we aim to demonstrate that with electronic control systems installed in 3 out of 5 WEC's in the wind fann the existing electrical grid can handle a generated output from the wind farm upto a value that is limited only by the thermal overload of the transmission cables. Thus the use of the electronic controllers reduces the requirement for expensive grid strengthening.
The costs of the installation are also reduced through the use of rock-socketed monopile foundations constructed with the aid of a floating jack up barge. With this method the construction period and erection costs of the offshore installation at Bockstigen Valar can be substantially reduced compared with previous offshore installations.
The aims with this project is also to provide better knowledge of:
* offshore windresources
and how offshore windpower influences
* flora and fauna
* the landscape picture
* seafaring.

The site of the project has an estimated mean annual windspeed of 8.0m/s and is on shallow ground in the Baltic sea approximately 4km from the coast of Gotland. The windfarm will consist of of 5 No.stall regulated WEC's type Wind World W-3700/500kW located 250 m apart in a V-formation. The estimated average annual output of the WEC's is 8000 MWh/yr. The WEC's will be specially modified to facilitate service and maintenance offshore. The modifications will involve providing special access decks and 0.69/10 kV transformers will be installed in the base of each of the towers. New "intelligent" electronic control systems by 'Westcontrol' will be installed into the base of 3 of the turbines to enable the wind turbines to be connected into the existing grid without additional grid strenghthening. The controllers will enable the 3 wind turbines to operate at variable speed and will also improve the voltage quality of the electrical output from the remaining turbines in the windfarm.
The turbines will be installed at water depths between 5m and 6.5m using rock-socketed steel monopile foundations 2.65m dia. by 16m long, and erected using one of Seacore's mobile jack up barges. The use of a stable jack up barge simplifies the drilling and erection operation and minimises the number possible delays due to adverse weather, resulting in a total erection period of (35) days.
The installation will be connected via a 3 x 240 mm2 PEX aluminium cable with integrated fibre-optic cable, into the existing land based grid which is operated by Gotland's utility GEAB.tallation will be connected via a 3 x 240 mm2 PEX aluminium cable with integrated fibre-optic cable, into the existing land based grid which is operated by Gotland's utility GEAB.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
