Objective
The project will be realized on the island of Amsterdam (TAAF), in the Indian Ocean and aims to gain the necessary experience and to save diesel oil which is presently used to cover the local energy needs.
The wind turbine has been installed in December 1986. Since then problems occured with the brakes, and partly with the electrical generators. Operation is actually limited up to a maximum wind speed of 13.5 m/s in order to avoid overheating of the two 18.5 and 11 KW generators. Problems occured also due to corrosion from the marine environment. During 1987 the wind turbine produced
7 250 KWh or 1.5 % of the needs in electricity of the island. It is therefore very doubtful that the machine will reach 17 % of the yearly consumption.
However, the experience gained is considered as valuable and useful.
A vertical axis wind turbine will be constructed by the "Centre d' Etudes Nucleaires de Grenobles" in order to be installed on the island of Amsterdam in the Indian Ocean and to participate at the local energy production which is presently provided by a group of 3 diesel engines with a total capacity of 100 KW.
It is a 3 bladed Darrieus type wind turbine with two asynchronous generators, of 18.5 KW and 11 KW, based on a 6 m high three-fooded tower.
The 10 m diameter blades are made by extruded aluminium. The rated power of 30 KW is reached at 13.5 m/s. The estimated annual yield is 71 MWh.
The cost per KWh produced by the wind turbine is 1,87 FF while the cost of the conventional solution, energy produced by the diesel engines, gives 2,5 FF/KWh. Thus the payback time is estimated to about 10 years.
