COMBINED WIND AND DIESEL POWER STATION

Objective

To achieve a wind-diesel power station which will utilize the maximum of available wind potential with a minimum fuel consumption and maximum availability, providing high quality power to a rather small isolated grid.
With the budgetary costs the payback time is approximately 6.4 years.

1) The diesel gen. set size is equal to the wind turbine nominal power.
Automatically adjustable power delivered by the wind turbine via pitch control, according to a system operation optimization software.
Proper modification/adjustment of the diesel gen, set controller to achieve above aim.
2) The application, where wind turbines are connected to a large rigid electrical grid, where their power represents only a rather small percentage of total installed grid capacity and the grid dampens any fluctuations of the power they produce, has been commercialized long ago. Through the proposed project wind turbines can be included in smaller generating systems, where the economic benefits can be maximized. The innovative station proposed utilizes a wind turbine and a diesel gen. set of comparable sizes. The control of the power generated by the wind turbine according to the grid load demand is achieved by proper software, which will control the pitch of the blades.
3) In respect to difficult access to Amorgos the costs for production of energy is rather high. With the maximum production from the wind turbine the payback time of the project is approximately 6.4 years.
From there on the costs per KW/h is only the O and M costs.
4) The results will be evaluated by a "before" and "after" study, through which the operating costs and the environmental impact without and with the presence of the combined wind-diesel station will be compared.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
