Objective
This project concerns the installation on the particularly windy site of the 'Centre d'Apprentissage par le Travail' of CHATEAU LASTOURS, of the new VERGNET SA wind turbine, the GEV 10-25.
This turbine, with a rated capacity of 25 kW, is double that of the largest of the VERGNET SA manufactured wind turbines of 12 kW, and will use the same inertial regulation rotation speed control which has developed over twenty years on over 2000 wind turbines, initially by the Aerowatt company, then by VERGNET SA.
Important innovations on the nacelle and particularly on the transmission axis with the use of a gearbox/generator adapted with LEROY SOMER permitting :
- Reduction by a factor of two the number of components
- To decrease the investment costs by 20 to 30%.
- To reduce maintenance costs and to simplify the desgin to allow access to correctly trained local operators.
The price of the kWh thus produced will be 0,65 FF instead of 0,85 FF achieved with the current VERGNET 12 kW wind turbine.
Other than the advantages attached to this technology (free-wheeling operation, high wind/diesel penetration potential (70%), this wind turbine will have the qualities presently incorporated in the VERGNET product range :
- All sites, even with difficult access (unitary weight of components < 300 kgs - erection and a maintenance without heavy lifting equipment).
- All winds, up to 70 m/s or 110 m/s according to applications
- All weather, freeze and frost operational
The GEV 10-25, with its reliability, its competitiveness, its ease of installation and maintenance will permit the development, already engaged, of "Energy of Proximity" :
- Coupled to small diesel grids (lower than 1 MW) where the costs of the fuel for kWh production are from 1 to 1,5 FF (1,2 FF on la Desirade, equipped with success one year ago with 12 VERGNET 12 kW wind turbines with a wind energy penetration of 50%).
- In support of low voltage, weak end-of-grid points, where the real cost of the kWh is from 1 to1,5 FF, following a study undertaken with the French Utility EDF, on the spacial variability of electricity costs. A market analysis revealed the existence of over a few thousand sites in Europe which would be favorable for the strengthening of low voltage lines with small wind turbines.
- In autonomous supply conditions, where the cost of the wind power generated kWh turns out to be 10 times lower than photovoltaic generated electricity.
The public exposure of the site of Lastours is particularly favorable to the diffusion of results :
- Telemonitoring by Minitel (free access for public information)
- Large frequency of visitors, due to the organisation of many specialist meetings and seminars.
Additionally, CHATEAU LASTOURS receives many visitors from the general public, attracted to the wines of 'Corbieres', that the CAT produces, but also the races and trials on Europe's largest off-road circuit (Stop over for the PARIS/DAKAR rally 1994). The VERGNET SA company, leading activities in wind energy, photovoltaic energy and hydropumps in 35 countries with an effective after-sales network (2000 trained technicians), will support the promotion of the GEV 10-25 on a market which is progressively more buoyant for small to medium sized wind turbines.
