Objective
To save energy for the operation of a water pumping installation for water supply, irrigation and other electricity requirements of a small but highly developed community, by using a wind park. The objective is to gain experience from the installation and operation of the wind park on a highly complex terrain.
The pumping system consists of five units located near Kalythies village. The energy requirements for these pumping units are about 825.000 kWhs and are expected to increase in the near future due to ongoing new drillings. Since the wind potential over the area of Kalythies is very high, a wind park consisting of 23 x 200 kW wind turbines will be installed parallel connected to the utility grid and directly connected to the pumping system. The exact location of the wind park and the optimum arrangement of the 3 wind turbines will be defined after an extensive micro-siting study over the highly complex terrain of the area. Wind measurements will be carried out for eight months and numerical modelling will be used to simulate the wind field characteristics. The possibility of using higher voltages will be considered depending on the final distance between the wind park and the pumping units. Optimization of the performance of each wind turbine as well as of the wind park will be tried, according to the wind conditions found at the site. A control unit will execute the energy management between the wind park, the pumps, the other consumption of the community and the utility grid the unit will be controlled and automatically operated in order to optimize the produced energy in relation to the specific needs of the community.
