Objective
Demonstration of improved and more cost effective version of the existing MS-2 wind turbine.
To show that the MS-3 wind turbine could be produced up to 25% more cost effectively than the existing MS-2 version and thus it could be sold on a worldwide basis for farm use. Also to demonstrate the effect on cost of energy of incorporating a 2 speed generator.
The construction and the demonstration of the WEG MS-3 machine which is a two bladed derivative of the three bladed MS-2 machine (see project WE/289/83/UK). Main innovations : 2 speed generator, adaptive control system teetered rotor and 2 blades. Other characteristics of the machine : 33 m diameter, 300 kW rated power, full span pitch control, intelligent control, low weight 300 kW gearbox, simple erection system and low maintenance costs. The machine, which will be installed at Carmarthen Bay in South Wales, is designed to operate unattended with high availability. Teetering of the two bladed rotor allows an increase in diameter with significantly increasing the structural loads. The induction generator is a 300/100 kW, 4/6 pole, 50 Hz and will operate at 1500/1000 rpm corresponding to 48/32 rotor rpm.
The demonstration phase will include the following measurements : wind data, power curve, number of speed changes, machine availability, overall output etc.
