Objective
To demonstrate the fixed geometry technology at medium size wind turbines by undertaking the detailed design, construction and testing of a vertical axis wind turbine rated at 500 kW and connected to the CEGB grid.
Wind turbine in operation since September 1990.
On the basis of the existing 25 m diameter vertical axis wind turbine at Carmarthen Bay, a fixed bladed, stall controlled 500 kW machine will be designed, manufactured and installed at the same place.
The VAWT 850 machine will be fixed geometry and will comprise two vertically mounted blades, one at either end of a horizontal crossarm. Each blade is connected to the crossarm at its centre without supplementary supporting struts. Some of the advantages of this configuration are : elimination of losses due to the struts, reduction of costs and maintenance increase of reliability and fabrication of the blades in one piece. The blades are from composite using both wood and other man made fibres. Its length is 24,3 m. The wind turbine diameter is 35 m. The induction generator has a rated output of 500 kW and will be mounted directly underneath the three stages epicyclic gearbox, at the top of the concrete tower. During the demonstration phase it will be possible to evaluate the satisfactory operation of all mechanical, electrical and safety systems, to compile the performance characteristics, to measure the loads, to measure the electrical performance its behaviour under emergency conditions etc.
