DEMO AND MEASUREMENT OF 2 HIGH PERFORMING 1MW WIND TURBINES IN LOW SPEED AREAS

Objectif

The aim of this project is to design, manufacture, install, test, measure and demonstrate a 2 units 1 MW NEG MICON wind turbines adapted for low wind speed areas. The main idea is to build a wind turbine that can make the exploitation of wind energy possible in areas that has not yet been found attractive. The new concept shall attract commercial as well as institutional investors for future wind farm projects within these areas. The specific aim is to increase the power production up to 22% (depending on-site specific conditions) compared to the standard wind turbine and thereby out-balance the low/medium conditions.
The concept is from a technological point of view based on a newly developed wind turbine with an enhanced rotor diameter, which is very large for this wind turbine type, implying a swept area of the rotor of about 2830 m². The consequences of enlarging the rotor is an overall redesign of the whole wind turbine as almost all load factors increases, whereby a complete redesign is necessary.
After design, installation and initial test the comprehensive measurement programme starts. This programme includes all main features of a complete measurement programme, displaying and verifying all design parameters and the actual performance of the concept. Parallel to this is a grid connection monitoring (measuring) programme taking place in order to verify the impacts from the wind turbine to the local high tension grid.

The processes within this project can be described in following steps :design, development, manufacturing, installation, test and operation of 2 units of 1 MW wind turbines specifically adapted for areas with low annual mean wind speeds-followed by a 12 months comprehensive measurement programme.
Design : The design process of the rotor and the wind turbine is an interplay between the wind turbine manufacturer and the blade manufacturer, aiming at a wind turbine with a rotor diameter of 60 meters. The rotor design is based on experience of the manufacturer (LM) who is a world leader in design and manufacturing of blades made of fibre glass reinforced polyester, with more than 15 years of experience.
The wind turbine is a strongly modified NEG-MICON MW wind turbine, with a blade length of 29 m , giving a total swept area of more than 2800 m². The tubular steel tower will be enhanced from 50 to 70 meters.
Installation of the wind turbine in a low wind speed area in Central Sweden and the initial test is carried out by NEG-MICON. The following comprehensive measurement programme (loads, performance, wind) is carried out by Garrad Hassan and Partners Ltd in order to verify the performance as well as the general design parameters. Parallel to this is a grid quality measurement programme carried out by the local utility (Gullspang Nät SEV AB) in order to analyse the impacts from the wind turbine into the local electricity grid.
The final evaluation process including all parties involved is important as an indication of the concepts future role in the global expansion of wind energy plants.

Programme(s)
