NEW IEC CLASS "I PLUS" 750 KW WIND TURBINE FOR HIGH WIND SITES IN HILLY REGIONS

Objective

The aim of the project is to demonstrate the technical and economic viability of a new 750 kW wind turbine specially designed for the cost-efficient exploitation of sites with very severe wind conditions where tight space restrictions for transport and erection are found. The real possibilities and the practical limits of the new design will be assessed as well from the standpoint of the operation results in terms of reliability and durability as for the transport and erection problems under the extreme conditions existing at the test site.

The project consists in the installation and monitoring of 3 units of the new 750 kW wind turbine developed by NEG-MICON designated as IEC class "I PLUS" operating under the very severe wind and orographic conditions of the Cuadramon hill.
The new wind turbine has been designed to provide an efficient and reliable operation and to assure a good life time in the hard wind conditions existing in mountainous regions. A strong wake effect on the machine is further added to these tough natural conditions owing to the need of a close position of the wind turbines imposed by the space restrictions on the hill ridge. The special design requirements to be met are related to: ambient turbulence, wake turbulence and vertical component. The result is a special wind turbine with a reinforced design of critical components: foundation, tower, yaw system, frame, main shaft, main bearing, hub and mechanical brake. The fundamental criteria applied in the design have been:
- A high rated power to efficiently exploit the high energy potential of the wind (750 kW)
- A compromise between the strengh of the machine and the need to have a competitive market price.
- Ability to be transported on narrow and short-radius roads and for erection on a reduced working surface (a 3 parts tower will be used)
The main characteristics of wind turbine are:
- Rated power: 750 kW
- Hub height: 46m
- Rotor diameter: 44m
- Weights: rotor : 13.5 ton, nacelle: 23.5 ton, tower: 44 ton
- 3-bladed stall regulated machine.
Erection and maintenance and service procedures for the specific conditions of the sites are also main issues to be tested. The site for the test is the highest ridge in the area with an elevation around 1060 m above the sea level and showing very steep slopes (about 30° around the ridge). The wind data measured at the site give an annual average wind speed of 12.5 m/s at the hub height and overdesign-load conditions could occur even for the special IEC class I PLUS wind turbine.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
