Objective
To construct, install and operate a 20 m diameter, 150 kW horizontal axis wind turbine based on the existing 30 kW, 12 m diameter. The wind turbine will be grid connected and the objective is to generate 300 MWH/yr.
Wind turbine was put in operation in August 1989.
The initial results are very promising showing capacity factor of 34 % and availability factor 90 %.
The energy produced up to March 1992 was over 1227 MWh, which is by 50% more than initially estimated due to better machine performance and due to higher wind speeds at the site of installation.
The project is therefore considered technically as successful from every aspect. The project has been replicated. More than 66 machines have been produced during the project period. The machine was scaled up to 200 MW, the prototype installed on september 1992 in Spain.
ECOTECNIA will construct a 150 kW 20 m diameter, upwind, 3 bladed wind turbine which will be installed at Tarragona where the annual mean average speed is about 6.5 m/s. The operational wind speeds are between 4 m/s and 25 m/s, and the asynchronous generator reaches its maximum at 16 m/s. The machine uses pitch control and has an active yawing system. The teethered rotor is based on the top of a 28 m tubular tower. The cost of energy generated has been estimated to 9,88 pts/KWh and thus the payback time has been estimated to 22 years which is expected to be reduced at 8 years when the machine will come into commercialization.
