M55 SINGLE BLADED WEC OF THIRD GENERATION

Objective

M55 is intented to be the first medium-large size single bladed WEC really competitive on the market. The first type will be manufactured and installed by Riva Calzoni to demonstrate how M55 is particularly fit for low windy areas with respect to the energy production efficiency. At an average wind speed of 5.5 m/s at 15 m height the annual energy yield will be roughly 2000 MWh.
Our Company decided to interrupt the development of this wind energy converter for several reasons :
1) The acquisition during this year of a deeper acknowledge of the Italian sites, of their localization and the relevant logistic problems, let us realize that the machine, as we defined it, involves costs for transportation and readjustment of the access roads, which are not acceptable in many cases. So the final product would not be suitable for the market, since the Italian market should represent most part of the turnover of this machine. In the future, when the project will be continued, we will aim at a reduction of the machine size to about 40-45 m diameter.
2) Due to the delays in the realization of the Italian Energy Plan, the market has not developed yet as we expected and therefore the production of medium size machines is still too small. At present it is therefore important for our Company to aim at the increase of the market and of the production of this size.
3) Theabove mentioned delay in the realization of the Italian Energy Plan involves also a delay in ENEL decision to buy the first M55 unit, so the existence of the main purchaser is not assured.
4) The recent heavy economic depression at European and above all Italian level compelled our Company to decrease its investments and its indebtedness also giving up of the risksiet projects.
The above does not mean the final giving up of this project, but it will be continued only with the modification as per point 1 and when the production of our medium size machie reaches a sufficient volume.
On that occasion Riva Calzoni will carry out the project at its expense and will present a possible financing request to the Commission for the machine realization only after obtaining the financial cover for the remaining part of the costs.

M55 represents the maximum size achievable by a single blade unit with a typical medium size technology. Many features are anyway absolutely innovative, deriving from Riva Calzoni experience on single bladed units and meant to underline the advantages coming from the single blade concept.
- possible adoption of two different generating systems
. low range variable speed - two generators
. broad range variable speed - one generator;
- the rotor design is according to a completely new concept
. the hub design is optimized in order to reduce the hub weight as much as possible
. the counterweight is not pitching, thus allowing for an aerodynamical improvement of the whole rotor due to the adoption of airfoil sections for the arm
. the blade design will be the optimum for the largest energy exploitation with the minimum noise;
- further conceptual improvements with respect to M30 are in the flap, pitch and yaw subsystens;
- the computer control system will be developed in order to allow the higher level of adaptation to the site features;
- a steel or a concrete tower will be available depending on the specific requirements.
Despite the unit is particularly indicated for low windy areas, the single blade concept allows a safe installation even in sites where wind characteristics (turbulence, survival wind speed, etc.) are the worst. The "broad range variable speed", high power version, is specifically foreseen to guarantee the optimum energy exploitation of sites with a high wind potential.
The target for the typical Italian site of installation is to produce power at an actual cost lower than 100 Lit/kWh.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
