Objective
The long-term goal is to optimize the NORDEX-52 in order to bring it to production stage as a solid, maintenance-free wind turbine which is to be able to run efficiently at places with strong winds as well as at inland sites. Its huges tower (hub-height 60 m) and the swept area of more than 2100 m2 (rotor-diameter 52 m) are to ensure an economical use at various sites. The expected energy production costs of the series machine in dependency of the site and financing of the project will reach less than 0,12 DM/kWh and thus make the profitable use of wind energy possible.
The consequent use of rubber-metal components for the drive system and the rotation speed of only 20,6 rpm make it a slow turning and sound-optimized 800 kW wind turbine and will therefore ensure the public acceptance of the machine.
The NORDEX-52 wind generator is a windturbine with a rated output of 800 kW. The machine is to be produced at the new NORDEX-plant in Ostsebad Rerik (Mecklenburg Vorpommern). The turbine will be erected at a place in Dithmarschen (Schleswig-Holstein) in January 1995. During the subsequent period of observation the machine will be tested and optimized in order to bring it to production stage.
The stall-regulated windturbine has a three-bladed upwind rotor with horizontal axis. With its rotor-diameter of 52 m, the hub-hight of 60 metres and the rated output of 800 kW the N-52 will be one of the first windturbines in the 1 MW class.
The construction of the N-52 is full of innovative aspects which serve to improve the quality and to reduce the specific costs of modern wind generators.
The shock-loads are reduced by the consequent employment of rubber-metal components. This will lead to an immense noise reduction and improve the public acceptance of this windturbine.
According to the swept area of more than 2100 m3 and the corresponding yields, which will be 50% higher than the output of conventional 500 kW machines, the utilization factor of scarce and valuable wind sites will be increased. Thus the regional (wind) energy supply can be improved extremely.
The tubular tower and the foundation of the NORDEX-52 are linked with a special concrete construction which is to take in the controller and the transformer unit. Consequently there is no more need for a special cabin beside the wind turbine, which leads to further cost reduction.
While the remote control of wind generators is almost standard in most of the marketable systems, the N-52 will be equipped with extremely fast controller that uses fibre optic cable and ISDN to transfer information within the machine and between the turbine and the remote control station.
