Objective
Demonstration of the use of a wind turbine with a hydraulic transmission directly driving a roots blower air compressor at a water treatment plant. This is the first time that a hydraulic wind turbine, will be directly coupled to an electrically powered air compressor which implies that the air compressor can be operated on the required continuous basis, with the wind turbine supporting the motor and even using the motor as generator depending on the wind speed.
A BOHES 80 kW, 16,5 diameter wind turbine with hydraulic transmission will be installed near the building of an additional air compressor of the water treatment plant in Harlingen, Friesland. The so-called roots blower is normally driven by a 55 kW induction motor. It is planned to choose a motor with two shaft ends, such that the hydraulic motor can be directly coupled to the induction motor. The advantage of this construction is that the blower can be operated on the required continuous, 24 h/day, basis, whereas the wind turbine can support the motor, or even taken over its work, when there is sufficient wind.
At wind speeds above 11.5 m/s the motor is driven above its synchronous speed and starts producing electricity as an asynchronous generator. The wind turbine used in this project is similar to that one of the WE/422/84/NL project. The estimated annual yield is 152 MWh from the wind turbine while an additional amount of 14 MWh/yr is generated by the asynchronous motor.
