MS-2 DEMONSTRATION WIND TURBINE GENERATOR FOR THE CANARY ISLANDS

Objective

The project is to install a WEG MS-2 wind turbine in Tenerife and to operate the machine connected to the island's electricity grid. The objective is to demonstrate during the monitoring period that : wind energy can provide a major contribution to the electrical power requirements of the islands; the UNELCO staff can gain experience with and confidence in WECS operations; satisfactory electrical power quality can be produced under operational wind gust conditions; remote inattended operation can be achieved with high reliability and low maintenance cost; an acceptable environmental impact can be achieved for WTs and that existing efficiencies of operation of diesel generators are not significantly affected by the introduction of wind power. Innovative features of the project (compared to WE/289/83/UK) are : improved gearbox design, yaw control mechanism, corrosion protection and electronic controls, reduced noise levels and new techniques for erection and servicing.
Wind Turbine has been installed in July 1990.
A Wind Energy Group (WEG), MS-2, 25 m diameter, 250 kW, wind turbine will be added to an existing wind power plant consisting of ten 25 kW and 50 kW WTs at Granadillo at Tenerife, Canary Islands. The improved design of the MS-2 machine (see also project WE/289/83/UK) will be converted in order to allow connection of the WT to the 22 kW local grid. Machine performance will be monitored localy and remote control and monitoring will be possible from the UNELCO office in Porto Santa Cruz. Site assembly will be carried out using mainly local labour and a large crane. Once commissioned, the machine will be operated by UNELCO and a 24 months demonstration period will follow in order to investigate whether the objectives are achieved.
The cost per kWh produced by the WT is 6,5 cents UKL while the conventional method is 5,0 cents UKL.
At present this project is not economically viable, though with the benefits of volume production of WTs reducing capital costs, future projects could be economic.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
