BIODIESEL demonstration in Belgium

Objective

The aim of the project is to set up and realize a pilot demonstration with light duty vehicles fuelled with mainly 100 % biodiesel, a diester from rapeseed-oil. The rapeseed itself has been cultivated and harvested on Flemish fallow fields.

A selected vehicle fleet, owned by the project partners, is subject for demonstration, testing and evaluation. Five passenger cars on biofuel will be compared with two cars on diesel (reference vehicles) and this during a period of two years, with a minimum of 30 000 km/year.vehicle. The objective is to consume 17 000 liters biodiesel a year.
Two cars on biodiesel have the latest engine technology and exhaust gas treatment system; they are turbo-charged diesels with oxydation catalyst. Two other cars have classical atmosferic engines. As these four vehicles are all new, a fifth, an already used one was integrated in the fleet in order to investigate the influence of the age of the vehicle.
The follow-up and the technical-scientific evaluation of the vehicle fleet on biodiesel referring to the classical fuel will be carried out in depth. Items of experimental assessment are : general behaviour of the vehicles (performance, start), odours, noise, wear of engine(parts) and injection system, oil ageing, fuel consumption and emissions. Special attention will be given to the particle and CO2 emissions as these are the most in discussion in the biodiesel business.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
