ESTABLISHMENT OF LOCAL EXPLOITATION PLANS OF LOW ENTHALPY GEOTHERMAL ENERGY AND INFORMATION TO USERS IN THE GEOTHERMAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN THRACE, MACEDONIA AND KIMOLO ISLAND

Objective

The aim of this project is to establish local exploitation plans of low enthalpy geothermal energy on the basis of geothermal fields/areas characteristics and on local development priorities . In order to achieve the above, the following activities will be undertaken:
- a technicoeconomical prefeasibility study in each area under investigation.
- the realisation of four two-day courses to inform the users on the development oppurtunities that geothermal energy offer, and
- Input of conclusions into the existing Geographic Information System.

This project has been subdivided into four(4) phases:

- Phase 1: Technical Prefeasibility study
- Phase 2: Information
- Phase 3: Co-ordination
- Phase 4: Final Report

Technicoeconomical prefeasibility studies have been integrated in four regions of Greece(Aristino, Tichero, Eleochoria - N.Triglia and in Kimolos island). In the frame of these studies five(5) different geothermal applications have been examined (see table 1), based on the physicochemical properties of available geothermal fluid potential, on the local development oppurtunities and financial conditions.

The results of these studies are the following:

- Aristino and Tichero Evrou

In the geothermal field of Aristino four(4) productive boreholes have been drilled yielding almost 92,000,000 KCal/h. This geothermal energy can be used for the district heating in four(4) settlements Aristino, Anthia, Loutros and Apalos or for greenhouse heating.

According to the study, in Aristino area a total of 1,406 buldings can be heated useing the geothermal energy of the geothermal field of Aristino, with a total conservation of about 2,401 tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE)/year and the cost of the thermal unit produced has been calculated to be approximately 13.5 Dra/Kwh. If the geothermal power is used for greenhouse heating a total of 37,000 m2 greenhouses can be heated, with a total energy conservation of about 28.9 TOE/year per 1,000 m2. The cost of energy produced is about 1.3 Dra/Kwh.
In Tichero geothermal area a borehole has been drilled that can be used for the development of the following agricultural applications:
- Greenhouse heating: Almost 14,000 m2 can be developed when the greenhouse cultivation requirement of night temperature is 12 °C, with a total energy conservation of about 277 TOE/year.
- Field asparagus cultivation heating in a total areas of 21,000 m2.
- Eel culture water heating: almost 5,000 m2 of eel cultivation can be developed using directly the geothermal fluids in culture tanks. A total of 730 TOE/year can be conserved if eel culture is developed. The amortization period of the geothermal heating system investement is 15 months.

B. Eleochoria and Nea Triglia Chalkidikis
In Eleochoria and N. Triglia 63,000 m2 and 13,000 m2 of geothermal greenhouses can be developed conserving respectively 888 and 183 TOE/year, if the temperature demand for greenhouse cultivation during the night temperature is 14 °C. The amortization period of the geothermal heating system investment is 2.8 years for Eleochoria and 1.5 years for N.Triglia.

C. Kimolos island, kyklades

- Desalination of sea water in Prassa area with low enthalpy geothermal energy as thermal medium. A total of 300 m3/day can be produced with a cost of 632 Dra/m3 and amortization period of 20 years. In addition, 25,000 m2 of greenhouses can be heated if the greenhouse cultivation temperature demand during the night time is 14 °C.

These results have been presented in two day courses implemented in the above mentioned areas. In order to prepare these courses, the following material had been edited:
- posters
- information brochures (3 - pages)
- scientific booklets (20 - pages) concerning ALTENER programme, Geothermal potential and Geothermal exploitations opportunities.
The courses have been met with a great interest by a large number of users in each area, resulting in new investments in geothermal energy applications (planned or already under installation).

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
