Plan for Increasing The use of Renewable Energy Sources for District Heating in the Province of Central Finland

Objective

To carry out a detailed plan to increase the use of local renewable energy sources in district heating and for combined district heat and power production in the province.

The province of Central Finland consists of 7 towns and 23 communities and the total population is 256.000. All the towns and about 15 centres of communities have district heating networks. District heat for three towns is supplied by cogeneration power plants.

This project is including the following tasks:
1. Survey of existing simulation and collecting the preliminary information
2. Comparing the operative performance of new and old plants (follow up studies and measurements)
3. Alternative fuel supply studies
4. Planning of hte network and energy production plans or retrofits including profitability studies of investment alternatives
5. Estimating employment and environmental effects
6. One week training period for representatives of EU countries
7. Reporting.
As a result of this project each of 10 communities will be supplied by detailed alternative plans for their future energy supply and demand and information on possibilities to increase use of renewable energy sources economically.
