Objective
The principal objectives of the project are:
- to elaborate a local plan for the development of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in the Dodecanese Prefecture,
- to investigate the possibilities for the local manufacturing of RES exploitation equipment,
- to carry out an information programme addressed to the authorities, local bodies (local government organisations, associations, chambers, etc.), energy consumers and potential investors within the Prefecture.
The project aim is to elaborate a local plan for the development of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in the isolated Prefecture of Dodecanese islands (Greece) where no regional energy or local RES development plans have ever been executed. The project is made up of the following workpackages:
(i) Study of the Prefecture's energy system (general features of the region in question, structure of the energy demand, manner in which energy needs are met, energy supply problems, degree of RES exploitation).
(ii) Recording and evaluation of the Prefecture's RES potential (primarily in terms of wind / solar / geothermal energy and biomass).
(iii) Identification and evaluation of the factors (both endogenous and exogenous) which determine the possibilities for RES development.
(iv) The capacity of the manufacturing sector to provide the necessary equipment and materials.
(v) Dissemination of the results obtained in the above workpackages to the bodies involved in the elaboration of the local development plan.
(vi) Application of the GOPP method.
(vii) Documentation of the GOPP workshop's results - elaboration of the local development plan.
(viii) Information programme consists of the elaboration and publication of an information guide on the RES potential and its exploitation possibilities, the preparation and holding of two information conferences in the larger (in terms of population) islands (Rhodes and Kos), the organisation of three lectures (followed by open discusions) on the islands of Kalymnos, Karpathos and Nisiros and the dissemination of information by the local mass media.
(ix) Revision/completion of the local development plan based on the processing of the conclusions drawn from the two conferences and the three open discussions
(x) Dissemination of the project results to other insular regions in Greece (through the Secretariat General of the North Aegean and the respective Energy Agencies of the South Aegean, the Ionian Islands and in Crete) and to the EU (through the ISLENET network).
PROGRESS made towards project completion (17/11/96):
The first seven workpackages of the project (i-vii) have been successfully completed. On-going work involves the realisation of the information programme (workpackage (viii)).
