Objective
This project is comprised by pilot actions aiming at the introduction of biodiesel in place of conventional diesel fuel in the transport sector. We schedule to study different kinds of biodiesel which until now are not sufficiently tested, by checking exhaust emissions, fuel consumption and lubricating oil deterioration. The fact that there are countries such as Greece, where there is an important yield of vegetable oils but no yield of rape seed, undoubtedly calls for the investigation of the performance of other kinds of biodiesel that until now have not been sufficiently tested.
It is evident that some interesting biodiesel applications can arise in the countries of Southern Europe, which have a relatively high share of agricultural activities and notable vegetable oil production. The writing of a biofuel guide and consequently the training and information of the interested groups are the necessary first steps so as to give an impetus for the development of such applications.
As part of the 1995 ALTENER Programme, the Fuels and Lubricants Laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens (FLL-NTUA), in co-operation with Florys Spa (Milano) and the Hellenic Aspropyrgos Refinery S.A. (HAR), undertake a series of pilot actions aiming mainly at the encouragement of applications of liquid fuels which derive from biomass, especially in Southern European countries such as Greece.
The project embraces two major parts of pilot activities.
The first part of the project aims at promoting the usage of specific kinds of biodiesel in transportation and includes the study of such kinds of biodiesel which until now are not sufficiently tested; exhaust emissions, fuel consumption and lubricating oil deterioration will be checked.
Sunflower oil methyl esters and used frying oil methyl esters (used frying oil has almost zero cost as a raw material) have not been sufficiently tested and there is great interest for their evolution especially in the southern part of Europe, where sunflower crops predominate. Another kind of biodiesel that has not been sufficiently tested is corn oil biodiesel. However, its cultivation is very widespread in Italy and other countries. As for olive oil, it is known that the Mediterranean countries produce large quantities of it. Due to their undoubtedly higher prices in comparison with conventional diesel fuel, olive oils of good quality that are used for food-purposes are not suitable for fuel applications. However, there are large amounts of bad quality olive oils which can not be used for food-purposes.
Briefly, the first part of the project includes:
1. Preparation of different kinds of biodiesel; esters of sunflower oil, olive oil, corn oil and used frying oil will be prepared, and the possible problems raised during pilot plant production are expected to be located.
2. Mixing with typical greek automotive diesel fuel at representative percentages and measurement of all fuel properties.
3. Fleet tests in Athens, where conventional diesel vehicles (taxis, buses and trucks) will be fuelled with the above mentioned mixtures; this section contains measurements of exhaust emissions and fuel consumption, checking of lubricants and record of the first public reactions regarding the usage of biodiesel.
4. Operation of the stationary Petter engine of the Fuels Laboratory on biodiesel and measurement of exhaust emissions and fuel consumption under different loads.
5. Cost estimation of the selected kinds of biodiesel, based upon local and European economic features and international market prices.
Concurrently, the second part of the project will be carried out. It involves the creation of a detailed guide on liquid fuels originated from biomass which could comprise the base for training activities and information of appropriate public and private authorities. The text will be written in the Greek, Italian and English languages as the main target is to encourage some liquid biofuel applications in Southern Europe.
