Objective
By analyzing heating systems and energy consumption figures, then modifying heating systems and measuring energy consumption figures 29 in: making guidelines for the performance of heating systems.
The study mast result in a plan or management tool for compiling guidelines at town level to quantify assess and optimize the performance of heating systems for central heating in buildings.
For the heating of apartments often a collective heating system with radiators is used. The water is heated centrally with one or more boilers. By means of pumps the water is transported to the apartments. A preliminary examination turned out, that the total yearly normalized energy consumption of various apartment buildings can differ considerably. Even in apartment buildings of identical form and building structure, differences in energy consumption for heating can occur, that can reach up to 30 percent yearly. In apartment buildings of identical form and building structure and identical heating system, it is assumed that, in spite of different tenants behavior, these large differences are caused by inadequate performance of the heating system and the appertaining control loops. Many problems are caused due to a poor tuned water side part of the system.
The effect of a poor tuned water side system is, that the temperature level of the boiler water is adjusted much too high to enable proper heating of all apartments. Beside this, also many design faults occur in existing heating systems. A so called (Re-design) should be considered.
With these outlined problems the following objectives are defined:
The research can be separated into five main activities, which are:
- Collecting and analyzing the towns energy consumption of the towns Schiedarn and Leeuwarden.
- Selecting two or more apartment buildings in each town, for an analysis of the heating system, and the energy consumption.
- If necessary, the modifying (re-design) of the heating system as well as the readjusting of the system, in order to obtain a "minimum" energy consumption and improved confort.
- The measuring of the energy consumption in a winter period to determine energy savings.
- The development of a plan which can be generally applied.
