Assessment of integrated systems for urban traffic management on energy saving and environment pollution

Objective

* The development of an integrated system architecture for urban traffic management, based on new information and communication technologies.
* The definition of evaluation methods and techniques, taking into account different criteria and impacts.
* The development of a technology assessment framework.
*The experimentation on an urban area of the city of Brescia.
The main expected result of the project is the realization of technology assessment framework adapted to a specific urban traffic situation.
The general aim of the project is to develop an assessment framework for an integrated system of information and communication technologies to manage the urban traffic and transportation services.
In order to evaluate the impact on energy savings and environment pollution of new advanced telematic systems it is necessary to define the methodological approach and to describe the reference city of Brescia, choosen for the case study implementation.
Then, the preliminary analysis to perform concerns the following points:
a) description of urban traffic scenario, emphasizing dynamic traffic patterns during the day, private/public demands, recurring congestions, delays, travel times and operating costs incurred by drivers, pollution levels, etc.;
b) description of current technology systems in operations and of the wider scenario comprehensive of further projects under feasibility study;
c) presentation of an integrated architecture with information flows and interactions among different traffic management subsystems, devoted to user information, parking guidance, automatic road pricing, signal traffic control, automatic vehicle monitoring of traffic fleet, etc.
This specific transportation/information infrastructure for the city of Brescia is a paradigm shift, that is a new way of looking at, thinking about and improving the ability to coordinate transportation operations in urban areas, with the transformation of individual mobility into an integrated system.
Moreover, the installation of new technology applications has to lead to an improvement of global quality of transport and traffic services required by users. So that, the experience and potential benefits for users, producers, service providers etc. have to be analysed and classified.
Then, one of the main phase of the project is the review of the available evaluation methods and techniques in order to develop a technology assessment framework for selected and integrated technologies.
