Energy Savings in Public Lighting and Third Part Financing

Objective

The objective of this project is to study the implementation of a control power device in public street lighting, using Faro and Portimão (Algarve) as study areas.
The expected results of this project are the elaboration of a pilot study of the implementation of a power control device in the Algarve region and in the whole country and the elaboration of a pamphlet about technology, furnishers and financing conditions, directed to the Town Halls in Portugal.
The use of a power control electronic device in public lighting, which allow the adjustment of the light intensity to the needs in each moment, can achieve important energy economies (about 35%).
This device is already used in several areas in Europe and institutional problems are the main reason why it has not been yet adopted in Portugal. Market studies made by PERFORM for the Algarve region have shown that there is a relevant demand for this equipment. However, budget problems in the public sector has arised and third party
financing seems to be the way to implement this project. This study includes a pilot study on the potential market in the Algarve region and in the whole country and the elaboration of a pamphlet about technology, furnishers and financing conditions, directed to the Town Halls in Portugal.
