Fuel Monitoring Software Development fof Airline Fleet Management

Objective

The project is aiming at reducing fuel consumption in the domestic airline route network. The task involves the development of a software tool to be used by the airlines management to monitor and target fuel consumption, taking into account route, load, weather, scheduling and airplane type considerations
The projects results are expected to reduce yearly fuel consumption by at least 13%. It will disseminate the use of energy conserving strategies in the domestic airline sector and will provide a tool with which airline management will be able to better monitor, target and control escalating fuel expences. In additon, the proposal will review the existing fuel consumption practices and policies and will provide recommendations for corrective measures to be taken.
The proposed project is composed of three phases. The first phase aimes at describing the overall fuel consumption patterns in the existing airline route network. The next phase examines closely the flight stages of selected optimal and sub optimal routes. The monitoring softwre will be developed during the third stage and it will be based on the information gathered during the first two stages of the project.
During the first phase the goal is to describe the overall fuel consumption patterns by type of aircraft and scheduled route. Specifically, data will be collected reffering to:
- Airplane technical features
- Number of lights per time period(day, summer, etc.)
- Payload carried (passengers, cargo)
- Block and flight time data
- Weather and wind conditions per flight
- Fuel consumed per flight
The second phases goal is to examine and analyze fuel consumption by each flight stage. Fuel consumption measurements will be related to:
- each flight stage (taxi in and out of the airport, take-off, climb, cruise, descent, approach, landing) of the selected destination routes
- different flying conditions (weather, wind, passenger and cargo load factor, other weight carried).
During the final phase of the project, the fuel consumption functional relationships of each destination route will form the basis for building the fuel monitoring software. The software will provide the user with updated information on the fuel consumption performance of each destination flight by each type of airplane utilized. The information generated will include:
- Actual fuel consumption per flight performed per period
- Optimal fuel consumption per flight performed per period
- Comparison of actual and optimal fuel consumption
- Flight overconsumption as compared to other flights on the given route
- Excess fuel consumption due to network delays and flying speeds
- Fuel consumption targeting
- Suggested actions to be taken for reducing fuel consumption

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
