Study on efficient washing machines, dishwashers and dryers

Objetivo

The study for washing machines, dishwashers and dryers will use the similar method laid down in the previous GEA study on refrigeration appliances. The previous GEA study can be characterized by a statistical analysis of the present market aimed at identifying efficient from non-efficient models and a technical-economic analysis of life cycle cost in order to define possible future economic and efficient models.
The project will provide a common accepted methodology and basis for designing programmes to achieve significant energy savings.
Phase no. 1 : Definition and Test Methods
Categories for the wet appliances are defined. For each category the existing test methods (CEN/CENELEC/IEC) are analysed according to testing efficiency and performance as well as their ability to catch consumer behaviour.
Phase no. 2 : Statistical Analysis
In this phase data on the present market of wet appliances in the EU (the European Union) and other single European countries are collected through a questionnaire to the national energy agencies and through contact to consumer organizations, manufacturers etc.
A statistical model is designed and the data collected is used as input to the model to carry out the statistical analysis to derive possibilities for efficiency improvements in the short run. The statistical analysis and the EU-wide database will also be useful for the EU-energy labelling directives for the wet appliances.
Phase no. 3 : Life Cycle Cost Analysis
Technical and economic analyses are carried out to identify and analyse long term economic efficient design options based on experimental tests.
Future technologies will be considered. A review of patents found at the European Patent Office in Rijswijk (NL) and a review of abstracts from an information retrieval are carried out.
Experimental work is carried out. Basecase models are chosen through phase 2, by studying the existing models and through a choise of models with a fixed efficiency. Setting up design options for the experimental tests gives possibilities for explaining the differences in energy consumptions and to determine the relative weight of the design options that influence the energy and water consumption the performance taking into account.
The manufacturers' marginal costs of the design options are expected to be assessed in collaboration with manufacturers. The costs for the design options combined with the obtained efficiencies will lead to the life cycle costs curves which enable us to compare the new more efficient model with the base case models from a consumer-economic point of view.
Phase no. 4 : Policy Instruments and Energy Savings Scenarios
In this phase the results from phase no.2 and 3 are used in connection with input from the DECADE project to seek suitable instruments to achieve the potential for efficiency improvements in the wet appliances. Different instruments are put into combination to illustrate 2-3 scenarios for improving the energy efficiency in the wet appliances and to calculate impacts on the different agents and parameters.
Phase no. 5 : Impact Analysis
The phase consists of impact analysis from the scenarios defined in phase 4. Impacts are calculated and analysed for the electricity consumption, the environment in general, manufacturers and consumers. The impact analysis on electricity consumption is made on the base of the GEA-ESM model built up in the previous GEA study. The impact analysis on the environment includes calculations of the savings on emissions particularly CO2 savings. The impact on manufacturers are analysed from phase 2 and includes the changes in the overall market structures without an indication of the impact on any individual manufacturer. The consumers impact analysis examines the increase of the first cost and decrease of operating costs.
Phase no. 6 : Recommendations
This phase will incorporate the different results from the single phases and analyses into the conclusions that can be derived from the project. The conclusions will relate both to the exact results from the project as well as recommendations of the choise of efficiency goals as well as recommendations of the use of specific instruments.
