Objective
The objective of the research is the creation of a general European framework for the development of a determination method of energy consumption for domestic hot water production. This research is the first step of a global project which will lead to the conception, realisation and validation of a harmonized method for determination of energy use for hot water production. However, this implementation and integration of the framework is not included in this project.
The project is divided in the following work packages:
1 Assembling of national data on sanitary hot water appliances.
Objective:
An overview of the types of domestic sanitary hot water appliances used in Europe.
This includes:
- different types of appliances used in Europe;
- interaction with boilers for domestic heating;
- control systems;
- distribution systems.
2 Assembling of data on type testing of sanitary hot water appliances.
Objective:
An overview of national and European standards applying to testing of sanitary hot water appli-
ances.
This includes:
- scope of the standard
- requirements for rational use of energy
- necessary tests
- parameters to be measured
3 Assembling of methodologies for calculating hot water energy use.
Objective:
An overview of existing methodologies for the calculation of the energy use for domestic hot
water production under more or less realistic conditions.
The following aspects of the methods will be inventoried:
- types of appliances for which the method is suitable;
- list of required inputs;
- list of generated output;
- description of the model used.
4 Creation of the framework.
Objective:
The creation of a general European framework for the determination method of energy con-
sumption for domestic hot water production.
The framework will deal with the following aspects:
- dynamic behaviour of the equipment
- interaction with the installation
- user behaviour / tapping patterns
- climatic and national conditions
Coherence of the research
The idea is to first get an overview of the various sanitary hot water appliances which can be found
in the EU (1) and how they are tested (2). On the other hand various methodologies for
determination of energy use under operating conditions are collected and investigated (3). With the
information gathered in this way a framework will be built which will couple the characteristics of the
appliances, installation, user behaviour and climatic and national conditions with the available and
necessary tests (4).
The framework will then be the basis for continuation projects on energy savings of hot water
appliances and especially for the integration of sanitary hot water production of combination boilers
in the 'Annual Efficiency Calculation Method for Domestic Boilers'.
