ENERGY REHABILITATION OF MULTI-USE BUILDINGS

Objectif

The main objectives of the present project are:
a) To evaluate the technical and economical potential as well as the applicability of rehabilitation techniques regarding energy saving and to establish and propose specific and well defined rehabilitation schedules for improving the energy efficiency in multi-use buildings.
b) To define, test and apply a common auditing, reporting and labelling procedure dealing with the energy characteristics of multi-use buildings.
c) To inform and train building designers, energy managers and operators of buildings on the topics related to energy efficiency in multi-use buildings.
d) To propose the necessary standards and legislative mechanisms in order to overcome the existing barriers and to achieve an efficient application of the proposed energy efficiency measures.


Until now the following tasks have been performed:
a) Selection of 200 representative multi-use buildings in Greece (Athens and Thessalomniki) using a set of various criteria and performance of a complete survey in each one, using questionnaires prepared for this reason, in order to collect the necessary information including energy consumption characteristics, data for the building envelope, energy systems in use, other equipment, operating schedule, etc.
b) Examination and clarification of the collected data and construction of a data base. Calculation of the specific energy consumption for lighting, heating, cooling purposes, as well as the energy consumption of the service and office equipment for the audited buildings, and classification of the various types of multi-use buildings, is in progress.
c) Selection of twenty representative multi-use buildings (15 in Thessaloniki and 5 in Athens) from the total number of audited buildings. Performance of detailed surveys and weekly short monitoring campaigns for each building during summer (in progress) and winter periods, in order to obtain the information needed to understand the performance of the building and to collect the necessary amount of data for the 'calibration' of the simulation tools to be used. Preparation of detailed architectural drawings for each building.
d) Establishment of specific and detailed rehabilitation studies for these buildings including all details for the implementation of energy saving features.
e) Performance of detailed simulations for a realistic scenario and for various combined rehabilitation scenarios. Calculation of monthly and yearly heating and cooling requirements. Performance of specific lighting studies. Proposal of realistic and real scale interventions in the buildings taking into account all practical limitations and problems.
f) Performance of additional thermal and lighting simulations in some of the 20 detailed examined buildings.

Until the conclusion of the project the following tasks will be performed:
a) Establishment and classification of the priorities for energy rehabilitation and definition of exact rehabilitation schedules for each type of multi-use buildings. Evaluation of various schedules for the buildings' envelope, for the energy production and distribution systems and for the control of the whole building. Evaluation of the energy savings potential for each energy consumption sector using advanced simulation tools. Examination of combined scenarios in order to identify the overall energy savings potential as well as the performance of cost benefit analysis for each proposed rehabilitation schedule. Publication of a resource-guide book describing the possible rehabilitation schedules for improving energy efficiency in multi-use buildings, highlighting the practical aspects of the applications.
b) Performance of specific studies for a selected number of buildings using thermocamera, k-tester and tracer gas equipment.
c) Performance of a cost benefit analysis for each building and rehabilitation study.
d) Production of brochures describing the existing and the proposed situation for each building. They will be used to demonstrate the potential of energy savings, the possible real scale interventions that are proposed, the specific energy gains resulting from each intervention and the cost effectiveness of the proposed solutions.
e) Development and testing of a rating-labelling method for the existing multi-use buildings. Proposal of legislative mechanisms on the operation, maintenance and design of multi-use buildings in order to achieve the higher possible energy efficiency.
f) Organisation of a short seminar, addressed to building operators and energy administrators, with objective the training of the participants on the appropriate maintenance, operation and rehabilitation schedules.
