GREEK CONSUMER AWARENESS OF THE ENERGY LABELLING OF DOMESTIC APPLIANCES AND ESPECIALLY OF REFRIGERATORS AND FREEZERS

Objective

The main objectives of the project are:
- To make the Greek consumer aware of the use of energy labeling for the domestic appliances and by explaining the meaning and significance of the energy labeling symbols and figures for refrigerators and freezers.
- To collect available data related to the energy efficiency of domestic appliances and especially refrigerators and freezers.
- To estimate the energy savings and economic profits achieved by the use of the energy labeling and inform the public about the results.

The aim of this project is to inform the consumers about the implementation of the energy labeling for the domestic appliances and especially for refrigerators and freezers. The implementation of the energy labelling is based on the relevant Presidential Decree (180/94) and Ministerial Decision (D6/F1/26810/1994) as well as the E.U. Directives (92/75/EU).
For this reason CRES issued a leaflet in 2 500 000 copies containing information about the usefulness of the Energy Labelling. The leaflet explains to the consumer the need of the energy labeling as well as the meaning of the various information, quantities and symbols found in an energy label.
We register over 15 advertisements in major daily press in a period of 6 months (Mar 96 - Sep 96) and also advertisements in monthly magazine of Consumer Institute which is delivered to almost 120 000 households also for a period of 4 months.
Manufacturers and representatives provide CRES with data related to energy efficiency (energy consumption, prices, etc.) of the domestic appliances. Elaboration of the above data resulted in the assembly of a catalogue in which the vast majority (95%) of the domestic appliances, available in the Greek market, are found. In this catalogue, the domestic appliances have been ranked according to their firm, type, energy efficiency, energy consumption, volume of both fresh and frozen food. The information contained in this catalogue is available to any consumer, vendor or owner of domestic appliances store, on request.
With the above activities CRES attempt to aware the consumer to include the parameter of energy to the selection of the domestic appliances
