Objective
The objective of the present proposal is to develop a complete educational structure using advance multimedia technology, adressing the use of energy efficient lighting visual comfort in buildings. The developed material should form a complete, flexible, modular and transferable educational structure. The specific targets of the educational package to be developed are given in the following :
a) To collect, evaluate, combine and translate the existing technical data, scientific knowledge, industrial developments, climatic information, regulatory standards as well as the more recent research developments on the characteristics of the energy efficient artificial lighting technologies applied to buildings into a complete educational package, using multimedia technology, aiming to provide information and training on the appropriate energy conservation priorities regarding lighting of buildings.
b) To provide building designers, engineers and operators with all the necessary technical
The actions to be taken are classified in five phases:
Phase 1 : Collection, evaluation and classification of the necessary information and material to develop the training package.
During this first phase of the program, existing knowledge on the field of energy performance of lighting systems including daylighting integration, lamps, luminaires, control, ballasts, etc, new and advanced industrial building materials, etc, will be collected, evaluated and classified. This will include specific daylight data, industrial information, technical reports, testing methods, handbooks, energy and environment evaluation methods, predictive software, and existing applications. The knowledge and information produced within the frame of recent research project regarding daylight in urban environments, solar control and overshadow from adjacent buildings, will be translated in an educational format. Results from other studies dealing with the energy characteristics and environmental impact of lighting technologies, as well as the environmental benefits of energy conservation when applied to buildings, will be collected. The existing national and international standards, codes and legislation related to lighting in buildings will be collected and classified. The existing and available training material on the lighting design of buildings will be classified and evaluated to identify all possible gaps and future interventions. (2 months).
Phase 2 : Development of the 'FOSstudies' multimedia tool, and of the global training package
During the second phase of this program the global educational package will be created. The proposed seven 'knowledge blocks' of the educational material will be developed and tested. The seven blocks will be combined and the necessary links between them will be created to develop the first version of the 'FOS' Multimedia tool. The tool will be tested as a whole. The user manual will be written and edited. All developed material, in the seven knowledge blocks, will be separately edited in order to be published as independed material. (14 Months).
Phase 3 : Testing of the educational package in four pilot seminars
Four pilot seminars on the efficient integration of lighting echniques in buildings, and the succesfull consideration of daylight in building design will be organised in the four participating countries in order to test the created educational package. The objective of the seminars will be to examine the effectivenes of the developed material, inform the concerned scientists and engineers on the availability of the material and to increase awareness of engineers and building managers on the efficient integration of efficient lighting techniques in buildings and the succesfull consideration of daylight., (2 months)
Phase 4 : Testing and Evaluation of the Training Material by European Experts.
The developed multimedia tool as well as the global training package will be distributed to a number of individual experts for comments and evaluation. The collected comments will be used for possible improvement. (1 month).
Phase 5 : Finalisation of the training package and delivery to the Community.
All received comments and results of the evaluation will be integrated in the educational package which will then take its final format. The final package will be delivered to the Commission. (1 month).
The duration of the work is 20 months.
