Online solutions to better assess water recycling and reuse technologies in Latin America

Researchers have built an online resource to help governments and policymakers choose sustainable ways of using water for agriculture and sanitation. This kind of water resource management has gained importance in light of a growing world population and climate change.

There are many available options and technologies for water reuse and recycling (R&R), but these are often poorly or incorrectly implemented. A thoroughly researched decision-making tool will provide valuable assistance in choosing and implementing the right water management schemes. With the support of EU funding, the COROADO (Technologies for water recycling and reuse in Latin American context: Assessment, decision tools and implementable strategies under an uncertain future) project created such a solution in the form of an online toolbox. Specifically, project partners developed a user-friendly web-based decision-support system for R&R technologies. It enables users to better assess the immediate and long-term effectiveness of R&R technologies. In addition, the online decision-making platform allows them to design appropriate environmental planning and optimal investment strategies at local and regional levels that are in line with various water-related EU and global policy requirements. The COROADO team developed a web-based service toolbox. It helps to introduce or enhance the identification, evaluation and improvement of already applied water R&R technologies and techniques in order to develop effective and applicable policy options in Latin America. The toolbox also improves a range of policies, including those that involve resilience and capacity building, water supply and demand, and the environment. The solutions are accompanied by several key components. These include a webGIS (geographical information system) service, a software irrigation assessment tool, and tools and instruments to support decision-making for water R&R scenarios and strategies. Researchers also delivered guidelines on management strategies and policies for implementing water R&R technologies. COROADO outcomes will assist governments, private companies and farmers to manage and reuse their water resources more effectively.
