Components for Fibre to the Home

Ziel

The overall goal of the project is to develop opto-electronic components enabling the demonstration of a cost effective near-term fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) implementation for distributive and interactive devices. It is aimed at developing solutions envisaging the large number of devices required in direct optical FTTH connections.
The overall goal of the research was to develop optoelectronic components enabling the demonstration of a cost effective, near term fibre to the home implementation for distributive and interactive devices. It was aimed at developing solutions envisaging the large number of devices required in direct optical fibre to the home (FTTH) connections.

The key components in the research are:
highly linear laser transmitters and photodetectors meeting the stringent requirements for broadband analogue televison (TV) distribution systems;
optical fibre amplifiers to provide a high splitting ratio in the optical local loop allowing for improved cost sharing of head end equipment;
transceiver modules to provide components which enable the introduction of interactive services in future FTTH systems.
Technical Approach

This project develops opto-electronic components for manufacture, with special emphasis on overall reliability, low cost and integration.

The key components developed in the project are:

- Highly linear laser transmitters and photo-detectors meeting the stringent requirements for broadband analogue TV distribution systems. To estimate the influence of integration on performance and cost, modules with hybrid integration will be realised.
- Optical fibre amplifiers to provide a high splitting ratio in the optical local loop allowing for improved cost sharing of head-end equipment. The emphasis here will be on low cost while still achieving state of the art performance in terms of efficiency and gain slope.
- Transceiver modules to provide components which enable the introduction of interactive services (e.g. POTS/ISDN) in future FTTH systems. Various levels of complexity and functionality will be realised and tested in the demonstrator.

Work packages on component evaluation and testing will develop the appropriate measurement methods to check the specifications and to test the components against the defined reliability criteria.

The project has carried out verification in two ways; one by direct components evaluation and testing and the other through a demonstrator. The former will lead to effective component related specifications against which components will be tested. Cost targets have been defined and progress towards them monitored. Analysis of component manufacturing costs has highlighted areas where significant reductions can be obtained.

A demonstrator has been built to form part of a totally integrated broadband network with facilities for TV distribution, POTS and/or narrow band ISDN services. This will allow the evaluation of the technology and demonstrate the support of applications and services. The specifications for the components, the sub-modules and the demonstrator will serve as inputs to international standardisation bodies and common functional specifications.

The project has formed close ties with RACE project R2024 Broadband Access Facilities (BAF) with the aim of developing a common demonstrator.

The project will also undertake joint testing of components from other projects using the demonstrator facilities.

Key Issues

The key issues addressed by this project are those of reliability, cost and ease of manufacture. This project aims to develop components for use in networks in the near term.

Expected Impact

The components developed under this project form the basis for a range of commercial components which will be exploited in the implementation of fibre to the home and other systems. The project has had a significant impact upon the commercial availability of cost effective components and technologies for these applications.
