DEVELOPMENT OF A DESIGN SYSTEM FOR SUBMARINE PIPELINE BURIAL

Ziel

A design system for submarine pipeline burial will be developed to guide submarine pipeline engineers when they are to decide on the use of pipeline selfburial or natural backfilling of a pipeline trench as cost effective alternatives to mechanical trenching or engineering backfilling.
Also sand wave migration and shifting of offshore sand bars along the pipeline route are more and more considered as a problem area and the design system will comprise methods and recommendations to optimize pipeline routing and pipeline design.
Innovative selfburial methods and high quality mathematical models for natural backfilling and sandware behaviour are used engineering application for the practical design system.
Preliminary reports have been prepared for :
- Stage-of-the Art review
- Engineering Models
- Data Collection
Engineering models have been developed
- Sand waves
- Selfburial and scour
- Manual to operate the models.
PHASE 1.
1. Review of overall requirements and design procedures.
2. Data collection and review of existing pipeline behaviour.
3. Establishment of State of the art.
4. Development of Engineering models.
4.1 Sea bed stability (sand waves).
4.2 Natural Backfilling.
4.3 Pipeline Self Burial.
5. Preparation of User Manual
6. Detailed identification of work for phase 2.
PHASE 2.
1. Field monitoring programmes.
1.1 Scour and Free Span Development
1.2 Natural Backfilling and Pipeline Self Burial.
2. Physical Model Tests.
2.1 Sea Bed Stability.
2.2 Natural Backfilling.
2.3 Self Burial.
3. Completion of mathematical and engineering models.
5. Preparation of User Manual.
The User Manual should be looked upon as an extended users manual for the Engineering Models.
As such the manual will guide and explain to the operator how to utilise the models.
All theoretical documentation will be contained in this document.
