Objective
The project consists of 15 actions distributed amongst 5 Member States under 6 principal themes concerning the production and utilisation of castor oil:
1) Genetics and Agronomy of the oil plants
2) Technology and primary transformation of oil
3) Analysis of the market
4) The agricultural industrial interface
5) Economic bottlenecks in production
6) New industrial applications
The economic interest in castor oil is viewed in terms of:
- Substitutes for oil imports (100,000t oil)
- Increased agricultural and industrial activity
The ecological interest is viewed in terms of new green biodegradable chemical products and environmental protection. The strategic interest is primarily the creation of natural renewable resources capable of substituting for non-renewable mineral oils in the lubricant, surface treatments, bioplastics and phytopharmaceutical products.
