Modulation of Surface Properties; Surface Treatments for Improved Performance, 1988-1991

Ziel

Development of procedures to improve the performance of metallic and ceramic surfaces by modifying their properties. Treatments envisaged are: heat pulses (laser and electron beam), ion implantation low pressure and air plasma spray, plasma sputter coating. Properties to be improved: hardness, wear resistance, friction/corrosion resistance, fatigue life, surface chemical sensitivity.

Progress to end 1990

Installations

Loops for aqueous corrosion (up to 300) and high temperature gaseous corrosion have been installed and are working. A system for the determination of wear is under design. The construction is foreseen for the near future.

Treatments

The existing facilities have been used for a large number of treatments for further investigations. The following ions have been implanted: Y, N, Cr, Ar, He, Xe, Ti, D, Bi, on a variety of substrates. Laser glacing has been performed on stainless steel, aluminium alloys, steel coated with Fe Cr Al Y by plasma sputter, coating films of Al, Cr, Cu, Y, TiN, Ag-Pt and RuO2, have been produced. Low pressure plasma spray has been used for the development and production of corrosion barriers of the type Me Cr Al Y. Coatings for optical absorption as TiC, CrO2 and TiN have been produced.

Development

A study has been started to increase the hardness of AISI 316 by N implantation and appropriate heat treatment. An increase of hardness by a factor 2 has been obtained. The distribution of the N after the different steps has been determined by AUGER microscopy. The microstructure of the resolidified surface layer of stainless steel after different laser treatments is under study. The optimum conditions for the deposition of Me Cr Al Y on stainless steels by LPPS have been determined. Collaboration exists with ENEL and CISE and we participate in the ECAST cooperative actions.
