To generate a lifestyle change in a critical mass of the population of eight townships in east-central Holland to gain experience of the introduction and operation of the Lifestyle Campaign in communities of varying size and culture; to induce a reduction of the communities' household wastes, transportation, water and energy consumption, and to create environmental awareness.

Through intensive grass-roots community activity, to generate awareness and adoption of the Global Action Plan six month's environmental EcoTeam programme in the eight township areas of Enschede (144,000), Hengelo (72,000), Zwolle (91,000), Deventer (65,000), Almelo (59,000), Stnwiijker (49,000), Bathmen (4,000) and Zutphen (28,000). The plan will be promoted through recycling schemes, environmental associations, clubs, schools, women's groups, young organisations etc. The project will generate awareness of GAP through a continuing programme on speaking engagements, press articles, and correspondence with local governments and others. Community volunteers will be recruited and trained to give support to the EcoTeams as they work through the GAP programme, which addresses waste reduction, energy consumption, water-use, transportation, shopping, and spreading the message, on a month-by-month basis. Individuals will be further empowered in these actions by completion of monthy feedback forms, which will be analysed in the GAP Netherlands central office, which in turn, will communicate to the participants in the EcoTeams the achievement that s/he has realised and the overall success of the programme around the globe. The special contribution of the Dutch Lifestyle Campaign will be to carefully monitor the experience of eight townships of varying size and culture and to draw conclusions, of relevance to the overall implementation of the GAP programme in differing cultures, from the experience gained from each.
