Short-term effects of air pollution on mortality and morbidity: an European approach using time-series data

Bratislava is the capital of Slovakia with the population about 500,000 inhabitants, situated at the river Danube, at the foot of Small Carpathian Mountains. There is the concentration of chemical industry and 0il refinery.
National Center for Health promotion (NCHP)-formerly the research Institute of Medical Informatics-is responsible for the coordination and realization of the National Health promotion program in Slovak Republic. One of the main tasks of NCHP is the creation of the Information System for National Health promotion program, with the aim to collect, archive and analyze the data for the purposes of NHPP, including health indicators, air pollution data and other relevant information. NCHP is the WHO collaborating center for design and application of models of chronic noncommunicable diseases for modelling of morbidity and mortality.
Air pollution measurements are provided daily by the Slovak Institute of Hydrometeorology routinely (including total suspendéd particles, S02,NOX), as well as the meteorologic data (including average, maximum and minimum temperature, and relative humidity). Additîonal data about air pollution (different localization, analysis of the dust) are collected by the Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology in Bratislava.
The equipment for pollen monitoring is being installed at the National Center for Health promotion.
Health statistical data are yearly collected longitudinally. A pilot study oriented to the quality assurance of the health statistical data in shorter intervals is running at the Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, which can be extended according to the project protocols.
The Participation on the project can be as follows:
* Data collection and analysis of:
(1) the health indicators,
(2) pollen monitoring data,
* (3) air pollution and meteorologic data,
participation on the meta-analysis of the results of various centers.
