Development and test of modularly expandable, generally adaptable, hybrid systems

Ziel

MEGA-Hybrid : Modular Expandable, Generally Adaptable Hybrid System Technology
- to develop a standardized system technology on the standard of 220V/50 Hz AC-line coupling, that allows to cover a variety of different supply situations.

- to realize and assess the performance of prototype plants in European institutes for test and verification, configured from a set of only a few different units
- to study the integration of further renewable energy converters and the potential of large scale application
- to promote industrial series production and provide the technical basis for a megawatt
- range family of hybrid systems covering a multitude of different stand-alone applications.

- reports of the studies
- a basic hybrid pilot plant (ISET) for general purpose supply - experimental hybrid water desalination application (ITER) and hybrid island supply application (CRES)

MEGA-Hybrid : Modular Expandable, Generally Adaptable Hybrid System Technology Abstract :
Hybrid systems consisting of different renewable energy conversion and storage devices show an improved availability. Such systems allow a sustainable supply of water and electricity to cover the basic needs of people living in remote areas where no established infrastructure exists.
Due to the diversity of applications and approaches it has not been possible to identify standard systems. This has resulted in solutions with high costs and specialized technology which are difficult to maintain and repair. Progress towards a robust, cost effective and widely applicable technology can be made by a suitable modularization which allows standardization on the unit level where one unit is compatible with another. The aim of advanced systems technology is to produce a quality of supply comparable to that of utility grids. This means high reliability, expandability according to the needs as well as simple installation, operation and maintenance. The main innovative aspect is the modularization and total parallel coupling of power generation and storage units at the well established 220V/50Hz standard. By combining this with a communication bus for operational control the basis is defined for developing a set of fully compatible units which can be integrated into various systems. Systems can then be tailored to the specific application by selecting the appropriate units and can be easily expanded by adding further compatible units. This technology will be developed and examined in three representative plants in different European regions, and will be most suitable for industrial series production.
