A European Doctoral network on Advanced Meta-materials and Meta-Structures for Adaptable, Resilient and Sustainable renewable energy power plants

Project description

Metamaterials for renewable energy solutions

Renewable energy solutions have become increasingly important. They are critical to the green transition and our efforts to mitigate or address climate change. Unfortunately, many of these renewable solutions face challenges in their design and their requirement for critical raw resources and materials. With the support of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the Met2Adapt project will train a new generation of researchers in the development of sustainable metamaterials to advance the renewable energy sector. It will provide tailored solutions for crucial infrastructure to enhance energy resilience in Europe while ensuring safety and respect for communities.

Objective

This research puts forward an ambitious research and training plan that will foster a new generation of researchers able to design and deliver sustainable meta-materials for vibration mitigation, self-aware meta-components and eventually carbon-efficient yet safe meta-structures for the renewable energy sector. These solutions will be consistently backed up by tangible durability and damage metrics and the development of new code standards that will ensure fitness for service also with respect to the nearby communities. The focal point of this research will be the deployment of custom-fit solutions for infrastructure that is critical to the European energy resilience, i.e. offshore and onshore wind farms, and wave-energy converters. On the training side, M2A brings together a team of world-leading academic and industrial experts and puts in place an innovation driven training programme.

They will be able to drive forward the long overdue integration of advanced materials in renewable energy production. Key to our training methodology is our firm commitment on establishing an active and student-centred ‘training by research’ environment, which will put the Doctoral Candidates in charge of their training process. On top of the supervision arrangements provided by the Met2Adapt academic beneficiaries, the DCs will join a thriving training hub comprising formal courses, dedicated training weeks, academic and industrial secondments, and a dedicated industrial mentorship program.
