Understanding climate-driven synchronised crop failures
Climate extremes like droughts and heatwaves result in crop failures, challenging global food security and political stability. Supported by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions programme, the SAFE-Drivers project aims to understand how these extremes result in synchronised crop failures. Focusing on staple foods such as maize, wheat, soybeans and rice, the project will analyse synchronous crop failures across thousands of regions over several decades. It will also study the atmospheric and climatic processes that cause the synchronised failures through the analysis of Earth observation data. Finally, SAFE-Drivers seeks to determine how climate extremes transmit to other parts of the world through the transport of atmospheric moisture and heat. The findings will assist forecasting capabilities for global food security policies.
Objective
Global food security is increasingly threatened by climate extremes such as droughts and heatwaves, which can cause simultaneous crop failures across multiple major agricultural regions. Yet, where, when, and why such synchronized failures occur remains poorly understood. The project will address this critical knowledge gap, focusing on four staple crops—maize, wheat, soybean, and rice. By advancing the science of concurrent agricultural extremes, the project aims to identify the global patterns of yield failure synchronizations and to uncover the climatic and atmospheric drivers behind them. Ultimately, this will improve our ability to anticipate these events and support coordinated risk management for food insecure regions. The fellowship will also provide interdisciplinary training in sustainability science, strengthening my independent research leadership at the interface of climate and agriculture.
