Integrated Electronic System for Dynamic Emission Control

Objective

Objectives and content

As recognized by US PNGV (Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles) programme and EUCAR masterplan, lean burn engines, which offer the potential for significant fuel gains, are spark ignited DI (Direct Injection) stratified-charge engines and DI diesel engines. In a conventional IDI (InDirect Injection) gasoline engine the premixed combustion process is decided outside the combustion chamber by mixing air and injected gasoline ahead of the intake port; its present fuel consumption (i.e. CO2 emissions) is close to an asymptotic level with a maximum further gain in efficiency that can be estimated of about 4% in 2005. On the contrary, the process of DI engines is driven by the diffusion of the injected fuel in the cylinder air, being the combustion initiated by a spark for gasoline and by compression for diesel engines, with the possibility to achieve very low CO2 level: minus 15% for DI gasoline and minus 22% for DI diesel engines with respect to present conventional gasoline engines; however, DI engines show more pollutants (and noise for diesel) than those of conventional gasoline engines. Despite of intended CO2 reduction, developmental obstacles to meet low pollutant/noise emissions in DI gasoline and diesel engines will be overcome with the following technology:

- adequate injection to be matched with the given combustion system in order to achieve the proper in-cylinder air-fuel stratification
- integrated engine/aftertreatment systems plus related control strategies - variable valve actuation to dominate air/fuel transient in gasoline engines -specific technologies able to significantly reduce the diesel engine noise

The proposal is one of six projects dealing with the potential of DI gasoline and Diesel engines for passenger cars to achieve the very low CO2,CO, HC, NOx, PM and noise figures which are expected after the 2000:
1/A) Advanced valve control system (ADVACO)
2/A) Integrated electronic system for dynamic emission control (ELSEC) 3/A) Advanced DI gasoline engine (ADIGA)
1/B) DI diesel noise and vibrations control technologies (DINOISE) 2/B) Integrated aftertreatment system of DI diesels for cars (DITREAT) 3/B) Advanced DI diesel with high pressure injection control system (ADDI)
The first three projects of the cluster are addressed to the development of an advanced DI gasoline engine with ultrahigh fuel economy, while the last three projects are addressed to the development of ultralow pollutant and noise emitting DI diesel engines for passenger cars: the final result will be DI engine prototype demonstrators to be tested at vehicle level for assessment / comparison of these two different types of internal combustion engines in terms of their overall CO2, CO, HC, NOx, PM and noise potential. The cluster projects are structured in accordance with the following diagram in a modular manner so that they can be run independently of each other.
