Hydrostatical Mechanical Transmission

Ziel

Objectives and content
The Austrian Automotive Industry has a famous history, but the medium term strategies are more focused on innovative automotive components and vehicle systems.
In the case of Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG, one of the main plants (Division "Steyrantriebstechnik") is located in the city of Steyr. This area became the "Ziel 2 -Status" by the EU-Authorities because of its industrial structure with a high rate of unemployment.
As a supplier of transmissions for agricultural tractors, trucks and construction machinery the "Steyr-antriebstechnik" expects an additional production volume of 20-30 Mio USD/Y by offering the latest transmission technology with a mechanical-hydrostatic powersplit concept. The main target is to replace 4 step-powershift and full power shift transmissions, but also conventional automatic transmissions by higher technology and more features at the same price.
The specific target price will be 35-45 ECU/kW, the realistic volume for Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG in the project feasibility study are 5000-8000 units/year from 1998-1999.
The markets with the first priority are applications with a high ratio demand like tractors, special trucks, off road vehicles and construction machinery.
SDP owns patents and also licence rights on some main claims of the arrangement and the methode of operation on mechanical-hydrostatic power split transmissions.
To meet the objectives, the consortium comprises of two key-users (MB-UNIMOG) for trucks, (SISU-VALMET) for tractors, a developer and supplier for hydrostatic components (SAUER-SUNDSTRAND), a developer and supplier for electronic equipment (WABCO), a transmission developer and supplier (STEYR-DAIMLER-PUCH AG) and the research department for engines from AVL - Prof. LIST.
