Virus resistance in transgenic crop plants: influence of transport protein genes on viral host range, symptom expression and resistance of transgenic plants

Ziel

A model system based on a transport-deficient mutant of red clover necrotic mosaic virus (RCNMV) is proposed, consisting of genomic RNA 1 and a supplementary unit representing the 5'- and 3'- regulatory sequences of RCNMV RNA 2 which flank a foreign virus gene of interest. It will be investigated which genes of prunus necrotic ringspot virus (PNRSV), prune dwarf virus (PDV), plum pox potyvirus (PPV) and other plant viruses may be involved in the transport of these viruses in infected plants. Special experiments will be done to confirm participation of the proteins encoded by the transport protein genes in the virus host range and the development of symptoms.

The final aim of this project is the evaluation of risks connected with the use of transgenic plants expressing complete or truncated forms of transport proteins and risk assessment concerning recombinant viruses.
