Neutrinos: astrophysical messengers probing new particle physics

Ziel

Astroparticle physics is a relatively new branch of particle physics whose aim is the study of the phenomenological and theoretical aspects of nuclear and sub-nuclear physics that are relevant for abetter understanding of astrophysical and cosmological issue s. The one views stars; galaxies and other astrophysical objects as huge and cheap laboratories for particle physics. Thus one can study physical situations that are beyond the technical and economic capabilities of earth-based experiments in the near future.

The role of neutrinos is central in many astro-particles scenarios: in several stages of the stellar evolution, as secondary constituents of the dark matter, in the generation of the highest energy cosmic rays, or even be in the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. The objective of the project is twofold. First we will consider neutrinos from different astrophysical sources as probe for physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. In particular we will analyse the consequences of non-standard neutrino properties on supernovae, high-energy cosmic rays and the CMBR.

Second we will use the particular properties of the neutrinos, mainly the fact that they interact very weakly with matter, to infer information about the sources, such as their location or the internal dynamics.
