Solutions for preserving natural terrestrial greenhouse gas sinks

Terrestrial carbon sinks, including forests, grasslands and wetlands, are essential for mitigating climate change by absorbing CO2. Under the Land Use, Land-Use Change, and Forestry (LULUCF) Regulation, the sector aims to enhance the net carbon sink by storing an additional 310 MtCO2eq by 2030. In this context, the EU-funded EARTHONE project addresses the challenge of preserving Earth’s natural terrestrial greenhouse gas (GHG) sinks, examining how socio-economic, demographic and physical factors influence GHG fluxes. Focusing on vulnerable areas in southern and Mediterranean Europe (such as Croatia, Greece, Italy, North Macedonia, Slovenia and Spain), the project uses cutting-edge technology and living labs to develop effective solutions and guidelines for stakeholders in the LULUCF sector.

Objective

The mission of EARTHONE is to address the pressing issue of preserving and enhancing Earth's natural terrestrial GHG sinks by understanding how different drivers, including socio-economic, demographic, and physical constraints affect GHG fluxes. The project adopts a unique and interdisciplinary approach, integrating state-of-the-art data-driven technology with regional context (with a special focus on the most vulnerable areas in south and Mediterranean Europe including Spain, Greece, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and North Macedonia) through living labs to offer effective multi-target solutions and guideline to all stakeholders in LULUCF topics.
